The Recipe for Wrinkles

Everyone has their habits, be it chewing gum, biting their nails or smoking. Though not all habits are necessarily ‘bad’, there are those that we might be better off without. With age comes the big ‘W’; wisdom of course, but there’s also the inevitable ‘W’ lagging not far behind; Wrinkles! Whilst we may be physically unable to stop the clock, there are a number of small habits that exacerbate the skin aging process that our skin would be highly grateful for kicking.


If there weren’t already enough reasons to kick this horrid habit now there’s another one to add to the list. We all know that smoking is bad for our health and can have some nasty consequences, but not everyone knows that smoking intensifies wrinkles. Smoking will activate the enzymes that physically break down elastin in the skin. Pallor and wrinkles will surely follow at a much faster rate than what would have been had you put down the cigarette. Not only will the elastin break down faster but added wrinkles around the mouth will also become more and more visible from the constant pursing of the lips –eek.

Chewing gum

This one is for you fresh-breath fanatics! If the waxy fat that is drawn from sheep’s wool (found in chewing gum) wasn’t enough to deter you, then maybe knowing that chomping that gum hastens mouth wrinkles and makes you look grumpier just might? Chewing gum forces the mouth to continuously form different shapes repeatedly. According to top dermatologist Joel Schlessinger, MD “For frequent chewers, those formations end up resulting in a downward turn in the corners of the mouth, as well as a pronounced muscle at the bottom of the jawline,”. Once formed it is exceptionally difficult to undo. In English, this means that we will appear pretty grumpy as the corners of our mouth are forced to turn down. We suggest that you stick to mints and mouthwash!

Sipping on Straws, Sleeping on Tummies & Skipping Sunnies

“Wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been.” as was so nicely understood by Mark Twain. Essentially he is correct and even supported by dermatologist Ronald Moy, (the former president of American Academy of Dermatology). He cited that “Any repetitive facial movement can cause wrinkles”. This is something probably obvious to many though something we often overlook. This includes habits such as sipping on straws, a common cause of mouth wrinkles. Skipping sun glasses is also a classic recipe for crow’s feet, the constant repetitive squinting motion from being blinded by the sun, is sure to speed up the formation of lines around the eyes. Even frowning can leave an impression (quite literally) on the sides of your mouth. Sleeping on your side or stomach can also lead to a similar effect, which is why it is recommended to sleep on your back. If you want to go the extra mile, invest in a satin pillowcase to keep those wrinkles at bay. It is up to you if you would like your wrinkles to represent where smiles have been or where you have been frowning, sipping on straws or even smoking as mentioned.

Aging is simply an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t really matter. But if the appearance of wrinkles popping up is getting you down, at least you know there are skincare tools out there and small habits you can kick to minimize the effects.
